In a year which saw a plethora of album releases, it’s safe to say African artists held their own and were at the forefront of the culture. Whether it was Wizkid setting the world alight with Afrobeat bops which played from Nigeria all the way to the Dolce & Gabbana runway, or Cassper Nyovest selling out the dome in South African and performing before Queen B herself at South Africa’s global citizen concert, African artists had one hell of a 2018, so we have curated a list of 5 must-hear albums by African artists.
WizKid – Sounds From the Other Side
A notable figure in Afrobeats, Wizkid has cemented his status as a hitmaker. Whether collaborating with fellow Nigerian artists like Skepta or heading down south to collaborate with the likes of DJ Maphorisa the StarBoy Wizkid is always a standout artist. Although released in 2017, Wizkid’s Sounds From the Other Side album was stellar, with features from Drake, Chris Brown, Bucie and plenty more, the Nigerian born singer took Afrobeats to the world.
Burna Boy – Outside
Making a splash back in 2013 with his breakout album – L.I.F.E – Leaving an Impact for Eternity, Burna Boy has become a staple figure in the Afrobeats world. His 2018 album, Outside which was packed with hits like More Life, Sekkle Down and the smash hit Ye – which temporarily became Nigeria’s national anthem, proved that Burna Boy is a force to be reckoned with.
Thandi Ntuli – Exiled
Dropping her second album, producer and vocalist Thandi Ntuli gave the world her most honest work yet. Opening the album with a spoken word piece, the songstress touches on pain and the process of healing. A beautifully mind-blowing album, Thandi Ntuli is unmatched.
Cassper Nyovest – Thuto
A heavyweight in South African Hip-Hop, the Thuto album was Cassper’s coming out party. Released in 2017, Thuto is flawless, a true display of what South African Hip-Hop has to offer. Beautifully arranged and with hit tracks like Tito Mboweni *Sha Sha*, Cassper put the world on notice with this album. A must listen.
Sjava – Umqhele
Actor turned musician, Sjava has been shelling out hit after hit after hit. The South African, who won the Viewers’ Choice Best International Act Award at the BET Awards in America took his Zulu influenced sound across the pond. With packed with smash hits like Ngempela and Abangan, it’s easy to see why Sjava has enjoyed all the success so far.
